Twitter and Twitterific

I have just set up my twitter account and I’m now starting to like twitter. It’s a great way to micro-blog and Iconfactory’s Twitterific work seamlessly with Twitter and integrates really posh in the Toolbar of Mac OS X. View my twitter page here.

After 3 months of working with a mac

I promised you to give a full review after some time of how I like working with a mac.
As you probably know, I was a Windows user for more than 5 years. 3 months ago, I switched to the mac. First of all: Why? I normally pray: Never change a running system. But the question is, was my windows system running? Yes, it was. But how? I can just say that the windows does everything a mac does, but the mac does it a lot better. All the behavior is just different, and in my eyes just better and well thought-out. Many people ask me, if it was difficult to switch from a pc to a mac. For sure, you need some time to get everything known, but after a few weeks I was actually asking myself: Why didn’t I switch a lot earlier, or: How did I ever live without a mac? And as I hear, many other people tell me the same. But what’s it really, that makes a macintosh different? Well, it’s how everything works. You don’t have to install hundreds of freeware software, antivirus software, software to do this, software to do that. All you need to have on a computer, except for the specialized software is already on it. Basically, the only software package that I installed, beside iLife and iWork was the Adobe CreativeSuite3, a coding software and Skype. One thing about Windows Vista that I really don’t like, in comparison to the mac, is that the operating system sometimes gets more attention than the application you are currently working in. Vista is full packed with graphical stuff and effects that are maybe nice, but in the length of time they all really distract you from work. The mac just works. No speed problems at all. I am really happy with my mac, also after around three months of working with it.

My brand new MacBook Air

I recently just got my brand new Apple MacBook Air. Brilliant. And: Yes, it’s is thin. Very thin. Today it’s the first week of working with mac for me now; I really enjoy it. Everything goes like butter. I like leopard with all its new features a lot. I use spaces and expose to organize my windows and that’s great. I can’t think of changing back to windows again; or: How did I every lived without a mac? ;) For switchers like me I can recommend the “Top 100 Map Apps” from Chris Pirillio a lot.

Well, except for the whole mac included apps like Mail and iCal, iLife and iWork (which I really enjoy) I also like working with TextMate for coding XHTML and CSS, Cyberduck for FTP and for sure the Adobe Creative Suite Design Premium. I also enjoy using some smaller apps like last.fm and Skype but what I was really missing on my old Windows machine was the behavior of the mac. I my eyes a macs just work and you don’t have to worry about thousands of different apps including security programs to install before start working. Mac just comes with the stuff you need right onboard.

The MacBook Air
Most of the german mac magazines that have reviewed the macbook air so far write that they miss the built in Superdrive; I don’t. I actually don’t use it, and if, I think it’s no big deal for me to just plug it in. The only thing I have to complain about is that the Air has just one built-in USB Port. I’ll have to buy an USB-Hub these days. I am also content with the battery life, display and speed of the MacBook Air.

I will definitely post on a few more entries on my daily life and my experiences with my mac.

How my files system is organized

Considering that my brand new MacBook Air will (hopefully) arrive today, I’m currently organizing all my data and I thought I let you know how my whole file system is organized (or should be ;) ):

I own a Maxtor 320 gb external hard drive were I store all my data. On this disk I set up 7 different folders:

  • Music
    • My whole iTunes Music Library is stored here. It currently weights around 12gb.
  • Photos
    • I am organizing my photos with Google’s Picasa on my Windows machine, but soon I’ll do that with iPhoto then.
  • Projects
    • I created a folder for each of my clients. All the stuff that is related to the projects is stored here. I also have a file called “thoughts.txt” in all of my sub folders were I brainstorm things.
  • Software
    • This folder is split up into Mac and Windows Software.
  • Videos & Movies
    • My videos and movies currently have around 40gb.
  • Webdesign
    • Some webdesign code templates and cms snippets, backups of several projects, some free photos, my FileZilla FTP XML file and some other resources like icons, CMSs are located here.
  • Stuff
    • I put everything else in here. As it says; Stuff.

I thought it would be interesting. Just let me know if you have any suggestions for me.
