In case you want to create your own icon for the Home Screen of the iPhone / iPod touch; Here’s how:

Step 1
Use your prefered graphic application to create an icon with the dimensions 56px x 56px. The edges do not need to be rounded, the iPhone / iPod touch automatically makes the edges rounded and adds the typical glass style to it.

Step 2
Save it or convert it to a PNG File which must be named as

apple-touch-icon.png

Step 3
Upload this file to the root directory of your domain. For example: www.thiemogillissen.com/apple-touch-icon.png
Update: You can also specify your own directory / file name by adding the following code into the <head> area of your page:

<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="Images/HomeScreenIcon.png">

Step 4
Open your website in Safari on the iPhone / iPod touch and press the small “+” symbol on the bottom of the screen. Then select “Add to Home Screen”

Finish!

After 3 weeks of waiting for my local ONE (Austrian mobile carrier) Shop to recieve new iPhones from Cupertino, I finally got my brand new iPhone 3G yesterday.
After setting up and activating the iPhone, I transfered all my data including my address book, my mail settings, calendars and of course all my music. That all was done in about 10 minutes or so. The user interface of the iPhone feels extremely comfortable and above all very smooth. The internet works great over both 3G and Wi-Fi. Safari is just the best browser I have every seen on a mobile device. The camera isn’t really stunning, but it’s great to take a snapshot. The call quality of the iPhone is very good, and I also enjoy that you’re able to use all the functions while on a call.

Apps I have installed so far:

Twitterific

Wordpress

Remote

Flashlight

Facebook

As I am using Things (Cultured Code GTD Software for the Mac) every day, I am thinking of buying the Thing iPhone app for 7,99€.

All in all I really think that with the iPhone 3G, Apple really has “reinvented the phone”.

Update:
I added a few new apps to my iPhone:

iBeer

NYTimes

Voicenotes

Last Monday, Apple introduced its new service which soon replaces DotMac, called MobileMe. In my eyes, this is a fantastic service. You constantly have all your mails, calendars & contacts up to date. You have on all your Macs & PCs, but also on your iPhone and in a brilliant web interface. In addition to that you also have 20GB of online storage. They could have reduced the price of 99$ a year a little bit, but for such a great service it’s okay. I can’t wait till it’s out.

I promised you to give a full review after some time of how I like working with a mac.
As you probably know, I was a Windows user for more than 5 years. 3 months ago, I switched to the mac. First of all: Why? I normally pray: Never change a running system. But the question is, was my windows system running? Yes, it was. But how? I can just say that the windows does everything a mac does, but the mac does it a lot better. All the behavior is just different, and in my eyes just better and well thought-out. Many people ask me, if it was difficult to switch from a pc to a mac. For sure, you need some time to get everything known, but after a few weeks I was actually asking myself: Why didn’t I switch a lot earlier, or: How did I ever live without a mac? And as I hear, many other people tell me the same. But what’s it really, that makes a macintosh different? Well, it’s how everything works. You don’t have to install hundreds of freeware software, antivirus software, software to do this, software to do that. All you need to have on a computer, except for the specialized software is already on it. Basically, the only software package that I installed, beside iLife and iWork was the Adobe CreativeSuite3, a coding software and Skype. One thing about Windows Vista that I really don’t like, in comparison to the mac, is that the operating system sometimes gets more attention than the application you are currently working in. Vista is full packed with graphical stuff and effects that are maybe nice, but in the length of time they all really distract you from work. The mac just works. No speed problems at all. I am really happy with my mac, also after around three months of working with it.
